Quotations have the capacity to accelerate learning by passing on distilled wisdom. They are entertaining, have the ability to propel a person into action, solve problems and help achieve equanimity.
The great purpose of education is not knowledge but action. In this pursuit of knowledge we spend enormous amount of time going through books, educational programs. But unfortunately all we learn cannot be put to work. Most of the learning goes towards concepts instead of application. Tragic fact is we even start forgetting most of what we learn in just a few hours. So most of the time spent in theoretical pursuit goes waste. While we don’t have a complete solution to this problem, a partial work around does exists. The workaround is to provide emphasis on application aspects. While theory is also important for general understanding, learning and applying actionable portion instead of getting lost in too much theory is equally important. Just to take up an analogy, in this method while we state and prove theorem once or twice for understanding, formula that we derived out of theorem becomes important. So we will not endlessly state and prove theorem, instead we learn the formula and focus on applying formula repeatedly. This will truly serve the purpose of education.
Quotations are like formulas. They have the capacity to pass on distilled wisdom in a concise way in one sentence. In most of the cases, that one sentence is sufficient to provide clarity, or to propel a person into action, entertain a person and even achieve equanimity. There are quotations about every conceivable topic like marriage, success, love, risk, achievement, goal, failure, emotion, relationship, perseverance, motivation, health etc
.
I found the following quotes very impactful
: •God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
•A great marriage is not when 'perfect couple' comes together. It is when imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.
•What separates those who achieve from those who do not is in direct proportion to one's ability to ask for help.
•Having good health is very different from only being not sick.
•Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.
•It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently.
•The man who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd. The man who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever been.
Sometimes it won’t be an exaggeration to say one single quote will provide enough wisdom as reading a book. As they are usually one sentence, it comes with an added advantage of easy to remember, communicate and apply.
While quotes from well-known reliable person provide excellent testimony, it need not be so. If you really think about it at the application level, we are not truly concerned about who first came up with the quote. By saying so, I am in no way trying to diminish the credit given to the person who first said or wrote about the quote. All I am saying is we are more interested in how can we apply them to better our life. So quotes from anonymous serve as much purpose as the quote from well-known person..
Sharing our learning is equally important. On suitable circumstances, we should consciously make an attempt to share quotes that appeals to us. For all you know that one quote might change entire course of someone’s life and facilitate greater bonding..
